July 22 - Yellowstone

Today, there isn't a whole lot to share.  We got a late start, which was good.  We've had lots of late nights, and I think we were all due for some catch-up time.

By early afternoon, we piddled around in the shops of West Yellowstone.  I picked out our Yellowstone Christmas Ornament.  (I have gotten in the habit of buying an ornament instead of a T-shirt or some other reminder.  It makes decorating the Christmas Tree quite fun as we recall our travels.)

Still in their boots!

Late afternoon we headed back into Yellowstone for some fishing and then wildlife watching at dusk -- when the animals are most active.

This is our second rental car.  We had to return the first one because the brakes were failing -- imagine that!!  ;)

We picked up a box lunch (our dinner) at the Roosevelt Lodge then headed off to find a river.  We found a picnic spot along side the Soda Butte Creek in the Lamar Valley, located in the northeast corner of the park.

However, we we didn't lack for company on our picnic in the remote corner of the park...

Unita Ground Squirrels, only found in southern Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, & Utah

They made off with various crumbs and raisins.  One got really bold, jumped onto our table, and made off with one of our napkins.

The waters in the park are high and fast with all of the excessive winter runoff, so fishing has been a bust.  But the animals weren't.  We added a Bald Eagle, lots of Unita Ground Squirrels, and River Otters to the "Saw It List".  The black bear, elk, and buffalo were out and about in the Lamar Valley as well.  Not sure I would ever get tired of watching those guys!

Tomorrow, we are off to the Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyoming!!
