August 10 - California: San Diego's Balboa Park & Old Town

Today, the plan was to return to the Science Center (We hadn't quite finished yesterday.) and then head to the water park for the afternoon. But it never warmed up enough to do the water park, so we spent the day visiting Balboa Park.

We saw the Science Center, The Museum of Natural History, The Model Railroad Museum. We ate lunch at the Japanese Tea Pavilion and then finished up the afternoon by visiting The Air & Space Museum and The Automotive Museum. The kids enjoyed seeing all of them.

Easton especially like watching Thomas the Train Engine make his rounds on one of the many railroads they have at the Railroad Museum, which is the largest model train collection and rails in the world. The rail lines are constantly evolving thanks to a local group of volunteers that are passionate about their model train hobby. I loved seeing all of the little vignettes that were tucked along the tracks -- like an overturned forklift in the lumberyard, an old fashioned drag race behind a warehouse, and wives kissing their sailors goodbye at the station.

Lunch at the Tea Pavilion was super yummy -- Curry rice bowls and curried chicken sandwiches! Yum!!

After the museums, we visited the "Old Town" district of San Diego. Old Town is the site of the first American Settlement in California. They have preserved the frontier facades, mixed in lots of restaurants, shops selling all sorts of fun things, and historical museums. It was a great time! They have really done a great job with Old Town. Its full of nice shops and unique restaurants - not your typical tourist trap junk and franchises.

About 30 Types of Traditional Root Beers in Bottles -- YUM!

Easton has been excitedly pointing out Cactus wherever we go -- some really great, HUGE, impressive cacti in the San Diego Gardens and Zoos.  But, for whatever reason, this little piddly plant captured his attention and he INSISTED that I take his picture with it.
