August 6 - California: San Diego ~ Horse Races and Boomers

We drove for a LONG time yesterday to get to San Diego.  So, a late morning was in order.  After breakfast, we headed for a bit of a scenic drive on our way to the Del Mar Racetrack.

We drove the coast from San Diego to Del Mar, stopping at Cabrillo National Monument.  The beaches here are gorgeous, foggy, and so peaceful!

The Del Mar Racetrack has Family Days each Saturday.  They had jumping castles in the infield, along with a chili cook-off contest.  We enjoyed about an hour of infield fun prior to the horse races starting.  Then, we bet on a few horses and favorite jockeys and settled in to watch some racing.  We moved around the infield and track so that the kids could see the races from viewpoints -- the starting gates, from the finish line, and at the turn.

Josh and I watched a T.V. series, Jockeys, on Animal Planet that ran for several seasons.  So, a few of the featured jockeys (well-known regardless of the T.V. series) were racing and I snapped some photos of them being led onto the track.

We (unsuccessfully) bet on some horses, joked about claiming a few, and by the end of the fourth race, the kids had seen enough.

So, we headed to Boomers for the evening where the kids had a ball playing the minigolf, swinging at pitches in the batting cages, riding go karts, driving bumper boats, and going on fair rides.
