August 11 - California & Arizona

Today is a travel day. We have left San Diego and are on our way to the Grand Canyon.

Unfortunately, we just can't see and do it all. We'd stay longer if we could.

Josh and I have both LOVED California. We loved the beaches of South California; we loved the rivers and woods northern California; we LOVED the weather -- warm days/cool nights; we loved no bugs; we just loved it. But, all good things must come to an end. So, we are making tracks out of here.

However, California hasn't seen the last of us. We'll be back another time -- in the spring or fall. We have to return to Yosemite, we would like to hike Sequoia, and we'll take advantage of the not-so-sweltering temps to spend some time in the deserts of Joshua Tree, the Mojave, and Death Valley. Right now, it's just too crispy.

We stopped in the Joshua Tree Park Vistor Center on our way by.  Too hot -- We'll be back.

We entered Arizona to see a large wind farm, with its giant turbines planted on the terraced hillsides. We crossed several types of desert. I am not entirely familiar with desert ecosystems to name them, but they were distinctly different landscapes. As we neared Prescott, the altitude began to climb. On one mountain we crossed, one side had desert cacti and the other side had pine trees. It was a bizarre drive!

We passed several small, small town with lots of closed gas stations and motels. Apparently, there are some ghost towns leftover from some gold mining. Perhaps they were some of these? The best establishment was Burrito Jim's Motel & Spa -- hilarious!!

Josh won the award for "Quote of the Day" by exclaiming, "We have got to get out of here. The desert heat is melting our duct tape!" Of course, he was referring to the duct tape patches on our RV -- for more on that, see earlier posts... ;) He was serious, and didn't realize how funny his comment was until I burst into laughter.

I think the kids have slept through most of today's drive. I think San Diego wore them out.

Caden mentioned he is ready to return home. So, maybe it's good that we are nearing the end of our adventure. I am madly planning from the passenger seat, trying to figure out what we can stuff into our remaining time on the road.

Tonight, we'll camp in Prescott, AZ. Tomorrow it's the Grand Canyon.
